Owlstone, Mayo Clinic ink collaboration
June 2017
SHARING OPTIONS:

CAMBRIDGE, U.K.—Diagnostic company Owlstone Medical has established a collaboration with the Mayo Clinic, under which its FAIMS technology will be applied in a clinical trial to determine its utility as a rapid, point-of-care test for non-invasive assessment of the adequacy of bowel preparation before a colonoscopy. Of the roughly 14 million colonoscopies conducted in the United States every year, it’s estimated that as many as a quarter have inadequate preparation, which can result in the need for repeat procedures or an increased risk of missing a needed diagnosis. A pilot study demonstrated that Owlstone Medical’s technology was capable of rapid, effective identification of inadequately prepared patients with 100-percent sensitivity and 80-percent specificity. The larger clinical trial will determine if the FAIMS technology can be used as a pre-endoscopic test to ensure colonoscopies are only performed on adequately prepared patients.
