Lilly to open diabetes research center in China
December 2010

SHANGHAI, China—Eli Lilly & Co. announced last month that it will open a diabetes research center here in the second half of 2011. The center will initially employ about 100 scientists and support staff, mostly from China. The center's goal is to discover breakthrough therapies for diabetes as part of Lilly's global diabetes research and development efforts. According to Lilly, almost 10 percent of adults in China have diabetes. Shanghai native Bei Betty Zhang, an internationally recognized diabetes expert who received a Ph.D. from Indiana University, will lead the research efforts. Lilly also has manufacturing facilities in Suzhou, China, as well as more than 30 sales offices throughout the country, and has invested more than $300 million there since the early 1990s. In 2007, it launched Lilly Asian Ventures, a venture capital fund focused on the biopharmaceutical industry in China.
