NINR earmarks $2 million for chronic wound research
January 2012
SHARING OPTIONS:

BETHESDA, Md.—The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) has announced that it will be providing approximately $2 million in funding for projects focused on investigating the genomics of predisposition to and repair of chronic wounds. Chronic wounds, injuries that have not healed within three months, pose serious problems for patient groups such as diabetics and the elderly, and can predispose hospital patients to infection. The goal will be the discovery of new ways of identifying individuals at risk for developing such wounds and new interventions to treat them. The NINR's call for applications lists various areas of potential research for this issue, including developing new technologies to assess wounds and deliver genome-based treatments; genomic and epigenetic mechanisms; and the assessment of whether genomic-based strategies have any clinical utility as a method of chronic wound management.
