January 2013
SHARING OPTIONS:

LISBON, Portugal—Portugal recently became the newest member of ELIXIR, making it the 14th country to sign the ELIXIR memorandum of understanding. ELIXIR's goal is to secure open, public access to information regarding biological building blocks in hopes of bolstering discovery. Portugal will have representation on the Interim Board, and will join the European Molecular Biology Laboratory as well as the United Kingdom, Finland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

"In such economically troubled times, this is a strong vote of confidence for ELIXIR. We applaud Portugal for voicing its commitment to securing the long-term health of their science and technology sector, and are very pleased they have signed the ELIXIR MoU," said Prof. Søren Brunak of the Technical University of Denmark, chair of the ELIXIR Interim Board.
