Pfizer announces segmentation plans

SHARING OPTIONS:

NEW YORK—Pfizer Inc. has announced plans to separate its internal commercial operations into three business segments as early as January 2014. Two segments will focus on patent-protected branded drugs, while the third "value" business will consist of Pfizer's off-patent products. One innovative segment will be led by Geno Germano, head of Pfizer's specialty care and oncology division, and will include products expected to have market exclusivity beyond 2015 in areas such as inflammation, immunology, cardiovascular/metabolic, neuroscience, pain, rare diseases and women's/men's health.  
 
Amy Schulman, head of Pfizer's consumer healthcare business, will lead the second innovative unit, which will consist of vaccines, oncology and consumer healthcare. John Young, head of Pfizer's primary care business, will lead the value segment, which will handle select existing partnerships and future established product collaborations.
