Validated SPECT/CT imaging in MS models

WILMINGTON, Mass.—Charles River Laboratories has announced the validation of single-photon emission computer tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging for non-invasive longitudinal quantification of neuroinflammation in preclinical in- vivo rat models of multiple sclerosis (MS). To study the neuroinflammation that results from MS, rats were induced with autoimmune encephalomyelitis, which presents with signs of inflammation similar to that of MS. The rats were imaged with SPECT/CT, and displayed signs of neuroinflammation in the cerebellum, brainstem and spinal cord, areas also affected in MS. Adding neuroinflammatory imaging to the multiple sclerosis modeling platform supplies a translational imaging endpoint, which in turn allows for earlier assessment of both inflammatory reaction and treatment efficacy. In addition, it also supports endpoint evaluation of inflammatory response as detected by immunohistochemistry.
