Comprehensive COPD models available
October 2014
SHARING OPTIONS:

NEUCHATEL, Switzerland—The Network Verification Challenge has created a comprehensive set of biological models relevant to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that are being made available for review by the global scientific community. The initiative featured a new methodology that combined literature curation, data-driven prediction and crowdsourced verification to produce models that represent the existing scientific knowledge on COPD onset and development. These models were created as part of the sbv IMPROVER project, which began with Philip Morris International (PMI) and IBM Research and is now led and funded by PMI Research and Development. This challenge has led to, among other advancements, a better understanding of how T-helper cells activate immune cells that promote COPD inflammation, additional granularity to the process of neutrophil chemotaxis and an expansion of the macrophage activation network.
