Athersys, Fast Forward to collaborate on MS treatment

CLEVELAND,
Ohio—Athersys Inc. has announced an alliance with
Fast Forward LLC, a nonprofit subsidiary of the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society, to fund the development of
Athersys' MultiStem adult stem cell
platform for the treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS). Fast Forward will
provide up to $640,000 in funding for the
program's advancement to clinical
stage, and will provide funding for the preclinical testing of MultiStem in
murine models of MS to support the
submission of an investigation new drug application
to the FDA, with an aim of securing authorization for a clinical trial treating
patients diagnosed
with chronic progressive MS with MultiStem. If certain
pre-determined development milestones are reached, Fast Forward will receive
milestone payments
from Athersys. Athersys will collaborate with Case Western
Reserve University School of Medicine under the leadership of Dr. Robert H.
Miller, vice
