June 2013
SHARING OPTIONS:
OXFORD, United Kingdom—The United Kingdom
government and
investor and philanthropist Li Ka Shing have joined together to form a $140
million initiative in big data and drug discovery. The
undertaking will result
in the Li Ka Shing Center for Health Information and Discovery, which is being
built in two phases—the Target Discovery
Institute and the Big Data Institute.
The Target Discovery Institute, which is already complete, houses research that
will generate disease data
through the use of genomic and chemical screens, and
is supported by several industry giants, including Pfizer Inc., Johnson &
Johnson, Eli Lilly & Co., GlaxoSmithKline PLC, Novartis AG, Boehringer
Ingelheim GmbH, AbbVie Inc. and Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., which have
contributed $8 million for the
Institute. The Big Data Institute will seek to
develop ways to generate, store and analyze large datasets. Back |
